Pawleys Island Beach Real Estate in Pawleys Island, SC

Reasons to buy real estate in Pawleys Island Beach

Not only does the island enjoy oceanfront property, but much of it is also bordered by a tidal creek with access to the ocean. Pawleys Island’s relaxed atmosphere is surrounded by the best natural environment the South has to offer. Unique Pawleys Island is a microcosm of costal beach living within a 3.5-mile long island. Located in coastal Georgetown County, about halfway between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, this relaxed beach community has only 200 year-round residents, and is often described with pride as “arrogantly shabby”. The island is known for being a perfect unspoiled family beach location. Nestled in the historic and charming Litchfield/Pawleys Island area, it offers an unforgettable experience during all seasons. Easily accessible to nearby golf courses and only a 45-minute drive to Myrtle Beach and an hour and 15 minutes to Charleston, one can leave the charm of this southern barrier island, and be in the excitement of the hundreds of entertainment venues in Myrtle Beach, or on the lush greens of its over 100 golf courses.

Pawleys Island is famous for being one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast. Settled in the early 1700's by the rice planters who owned plantations on the nearby rivers, Pawleys Island provided a respite from their malaria prone river locations. These affluent families moved with their livestock and household furnishings to Pawleys Island in May and returned home after the first frost in November. This same leisurely charm is still reflected in the ambiance of the Pawleys Island life style. There are still 12 residences in the historic district, which date from its earliest times. Pawleys Island is always remembered for its barefooted, casual, laid-back life style, which includes crabbing in the adjacent creeks, fishing, its world-famous rope hammocks, its unspoiled stretch of sand along South Carolina's gold coast, and the telling of ghost stories, including one of a local legend on the island about The Gray Man ghost who warns of impending hurricanes.

The earliest known inhabitants of the area, the Waccamaw and Winyah Indians, called the area "Chicora," meaning "the land," and this name is still echoed in business names throughout the lowcountry.
